FAQs about private tax consulting
Social insurance, special levies, or procedures. Here you will find explanations of what clients want to know — based on the concerns we hear daily from Clients in Zurich and throughout Switzerland.
When is a natural person subject to tax in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, natural persons are subject to tax as soon as they have their tax domicile or residence in Switzerland.
A natural person is a human being, regardless of age, gender, etc., in their role as a legal subject, i.e. as a bearer of rights and obligations.
With regard to the tax liability of natural persons, further aspects must be considered, such as the scope of tax liability (unlimited or limited), the duration of tax liability (beginning and end), the consequences of a change of residence from one canton to another, tax succession, and the taxation of families.
Which taxes apply to natural persons in Switzerland?
The most important direct taxes for natural persons in Switzerland are income tax and wealth tax.
Income consists of income from self-employed or employed activity, secondary income, insurance daily allowances, as well as returns on movable and immovable assets.
Wealth tax is a supplementary tax to income tax and is levied regardless of the level of income. It covers total net assets, i.e. all assets minus liabilities and debts, as of December 31. Assets include movable assets (securities, cryptocurrencies, jewelry, gold, cash, …) and immovable assets (real estate in Switzerland and abroad).
In addition, there are other taxes such as poll tax, real estate capital gains tax, property tax, real estate transfer tax, inheritance tax, gift tax, and church tax.
What happens if the Swiss tax return is submitted late or not at all?
If the tax return is not submitted on time, the tax office will issue a reminder. If the obligation is still not fulfilled, the tax office will assess the tax at its own discretion. In addition, a fine will be imposed.
If a taxpayer is assessed too low, a subsequent tax and penalty procedure due to tax evasion may even be initiated. Our experience shows that no one escapes the tax authorities. Save yourself the trouble and entrust us with your tax return.
Can I apply for a deadline extension as a natural person?
In Switzerland, a natural person must apply for a deadline extension before the submission deadline for the tax return expires. The extension can be requested online or in writing.
What happens if incorrect information is provided in my personal tax return?
The principle applies that the tax return must be completed fully and truthfully.
The tax authority expects the taxpayer to complete the tax return correctly.
The taxpayer must make all necessary clarifications. If questions remain despite guidelines and information from the tax authority, a specialist such as ONE! Treuhand GmbH can be consulted.
Anyone who avoids this effort takes a risk: if incorrect information is discovered, the tax authority may accuse the taxpayer of intentional or at least conditional intent.
If incorrect information is not discovered, underpaid taxes may later be reclaimed with interest, possibly with a fine for tax evasion.
If discovered during assessment, the tax return will be adjusted ex officio. Fines may also apply, especially in cases of intent. Avoid penalty proceedings and engage us – we know exactly what we are doing.
Can I still submit the tax return in paper form?
The tax return can be completed and submitted either online or in paper form. Some cantons, such as Zurich, currently require the digital version to be printed and signed. Always check the specific canton to see how the tax return should ideally be submitted.
What is a tax advisor and which tax services do they provide?
A tax advisor is a qualified expert who advises and supports private individuals and companies on tax matters. They help maximize tax benefits and ensure the correct fulfillment of tax obligations – often with services specifically tailored to natural persons.
Services include financial consulting, preparation of tax returns, development of tax concepts, and support during tax filings.
Are there additional ways to manage income and assets in a tax-efficient manner?
Yes, there are various ways to manage income and assets tax-efficiently. For example, you can invest in financial products, set up savings plans, open private bank accounts, or invest in real estate. Tax-advantaged investment products such as funds, investment accounts, or insurance solutions can also be helpful.
Who can help me with submitting the tax return or obtaining tax refunds?
For questions regarding tax returns or refunds, you can contact the cantonal tax administration or the relevant municipal tax office. Alternatively, you can contact a qualified tax advisor who can assist you with completing and submitting the tax return and obtaining refunds.
How does the tax return process work?
A tax period usually runs from January through December of a calendar year. Tax returns are sent out annually at the beginning of the year by the Swiss tax authorities. You must report your income and assets using a special form provided free of charge by the canton or municipal tax office.
After the deadline in March of the same year, the tax return must be signed and submitted so that taxes for the previous year can be calculated. If a taxpayer fails to submit the tax return on time, a penalty fee may apply. With a deadline extension, however, it is possible to extend the deadline until September of the same year.
